Chapter Thirteen

“A watch.” Clayton examined the pocket watch in the light from the wall sconce behind him. The case was gold and enamel with small pearls encircling a painting of a man and a woman standing beside a cypress tree, both figures were dressed in Greek robes. The woman held a bow in one hand and gazed into the distance while the man stood beside her playing a golden lyre.

Marisa drew near and leaned close as she peered at the watch, her hair falling over his arm in a fragrant mass of black waves. “It’s quite fine work.”

He resisted the urge to press his cheek against her hair and breathe in her scent. Instead he focused on the watch. He flipped open the cover and tilted the watch toward the light, trying to read the engraving on the inside cover. “Always.”

“I would wager this was a gift from a lady to her lover.” Marisa looked up at him and smiled, a dimple appearing at one corner of her full lips. “From her choice of Greek deities I suspect she doesn’t have a good grasp of mythology.”

He tried not to think of the way her lips felt beneath his—soft and sweet and eager. “The maker will have his mark engraved on the rim of the workings. The watch is fairly unique. He probably has a record of who purchased it.”

“In which case we should be able to track down the woman who bought it and the man to whom she gave the watch.”

“This could lead us right to him. I will start looking tomorrow.” Clayton looked at her and frowned at the red mark near the base of her neck. He touched her neck, wishing he could erase the mark of violence left on her smooth skin. Marisa’s eyes grew wide, her breath halted, her lips parted as though his touch had taken her by surprise. It was only fair since she was forever taking him by surprise. “This watch will give us an excellent chance to find the blackguard. There is no longer a need for you to stay in Town and put yourself in danger.”

“I shall not allow the man to send me scurrying into the country like a frightened rabbit.”

“You nearly died this evening.” Clayton couldn’t suppress a chill from gripping him at the memory of her falling to the floor at the hands of the intruder. For one horrible moment he had imagined she was dying. He never wanted to experience pain like that again. “You have to leave.”

“Even if you are stubborn and foolish enough to imagine you no longer need my assistance, I have other reasons to remain in Town. Issues of a personal nature that I need to address this Season, something important. I have put off a decision I must make long enough.”

Clayton knew what issues she intended to resolve this Season. It shouldn’t matter to him, but it did. He had been expecting news of her engagement to reach him for the past seven years.
